The world is shrinking and there appears to be little debate to the contrary.
The following observations bolster this reality: Obama is now the president of the USA and some nations embrace him as their dog in the fight too; “Made in the USA” now means American products are put together by Sri Lankan hands and shipped by Chinese dock workers and Americans don’t bellyache about it; and Afghanistan’s indigenous woes are healed and mitigated by an intrepid Filipina along with other foreign national wonder-women.
The theme of this month’s E-zine is about how today’s work environment has taken a global flavor allowing for the permeable flow of workers who cut across not just geographical divides, but also right through political, cultural, and economic barriers. Erstwhile global divide “givens” – those once insurmountable hindrances like travel, language, and commerce that kept nations and societies apart – have now been overcome and transcended.
Today, careers are shaped with an end-goal of helping the oppressed in third world countries. Fortunes are built by enterprising folks setting up businesses in counties far from their own homeland. And more telling, world events and conditions have unwittingly created settings where we can find a blissful haven for our peripatetic souls. Indeed the global workplace beckons to all those who look to it to help fulfill their professional and personal dreams.
Surely, one can retreat to the placid waters of Walden Pond and contemplate just as Thoreau did, or journey to the battled-scarred streets of Kabul as one intrepid Filipina has done and find selfsame results.
Yes, the world’s global stage is replete with similar work settings where one can ply a trade, peddle wares, pursue a career, and actualize the “self”. Welcome the global workplace!
Happy reading.
